Debbie Reynolds’s daughter–Carrie Fisher, a noted Hollywood script doctor–cowrote this television movie as a sort of Grumpy Old Women, so the story goes. Viewed in that light, this 91-minute lark is entertaining, if frequently inane. It’s the story of the professional reunion of three feuding costars (Reynolds, Shirley MacLaine, Joan Collins) after their ’60s musical becomes a cult hit decades later. The fun part is the skewering of their real lives that these actresses good-humoredly allow. Reynolds plays a Vegas casino-owning diva who showcases her own talent and allows her dolt of a husband to run the business side of things–a state of affairs not too different from her real Vegas days. MacLaine offers a comic version of her legendary spiritual persona with such zingers as “My inner child is having such a tantrum.” And Joan Collins makes fun of her choice of men with a mobster boyfriend instead of that litigious young husband of some years back. Elizabeth Taylor makes a goofy cameo appearance as the actresses’ agent, and Fisher has a lot of fun staging a verbal catfight between the agent and Reynolds over a man named Freddie. (In real life Liz infamously stole Carrie’s dad, Eddie Fisher, from then wife Debbie.) All pretty good. But why the framing with MacLaine’s “adopted” son, inhabited by the unfunny Jonathan Silverman; and why the too-broadly caricatured producer? Only the daughter knows. –Kimberly Heinrichs

After their ’60s movie becomes a revival hit, three aging movie stars (Oscar winner Shirley MacLaine, Oscar nominee Debbie Reynolds and Joan Collins) are given a chance to join forces for a one-time televised concert, if they can overcome their long-standing animosity toward one another. Even when a legendary agent (Oscar winner Elizabeth Taylor) achieves the seemingly impossible task of getting the three to agree to the concert, the producers, worries aren’t over. The drama has only just begun!

When you have stars of this caliber, who needs a real plot? They do terrific send ups of themselves and the result is a funny, funny film. The fact that Reynolds and Taylor got together on screen makes the experience even more memorable.

Don’t go in expecting Shakespeare … but sit back and enjoy the inside jokes and the incredible talent of four of the living legends of Hollywood.

Actually, it is a lot of fun,

It is interesting to read the rather divergent reviews of this TV movie here. Personally, I loved it, having been a long-time fan of all of the ladies. Not nearly enough of Liz in the film, sure, but Debbie has some great wisecracks and Joan not only looks amazing (hardly surprising she just married someone her son’s age), but displays a genuine talent for comedy.

If anything, I was disappointed with Shirley’s storyline and the unnecessary “gay son” aspect. Also, aside from the headliners, some key supporting players are sadly lacklustre.

However, it is what it is - sort of an updated “Golden Girls” set in Hollywood rather than Miami.

More of these "old broads", please,

This film is a great chance to see these wonderful actresses(Taylor, Reynolds,MacLane) acting again! It is a farce from the beginning to the end, and you can tell these women let go and really had fun with it! I would love to see all three of these women in another film soon, especially Ms Taylor. They have so much to offer all of us! They really Don’t make "STARS" like this anymore. And I for one, find that terribly sad!

The 1980’s left quite the stamp on Pop Culture but none more so than the 80’s sex comedy. These films dominated drive-in’s and became late night cable favorites. One of the most beloved franchises of the 80’s was the Hardbodies film series! Both films quickly became cult classics but never received the DVD release that the fans requested…until now! For the first time ever both films will be packaged together and available on DVD! No other films captured the 80’s beach party scene like Hardbodies and this set is sure to become one of the most anticipated releases for 80’s enthusiasts!

Just today I gave a review on this movie, and complained about how (Hardbodies) wasn’t on dvd yet. Now I see that it is available in pre-order with the sequel. I seriously hope that they digitally remastered the film, otherwise it will be pointless. Starz and Anchor Bay are releasing it; so that is a good sign, but the price seems a bit low. This doesn’t mean that I like to spend a lot of money, but I would rather pay a little more for quality. If it happens to be a good dvd transfer, then this will be a really nice deal.

In 1983 SPRING BREAK hit theaters just in time for the time honored tradition of the same name. The film quickly became a cult classic, known for it’s great one-liners, totally 80’s dialogue and outrageous party sequences. Despite its popularity, the film was never released on DVD…Until NOW! The film focuses on two party guys that make a trek to Florida for a week of uncontrollable partying, however after a small mix-up they find themselves rooming with two of the biggest dorks to ever hit the beach. Now in order to remain in the room they must show the two nerds the time of their life! This is like, totally the most fun a couple bodies can have, for sure!

By Matt Stevens -

It’s about time Spring Break was released on DVD.Not only is this movie extremely funny, but it is also a great piece of history of what it was like at Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale in the early 80’s.This movie was filmed on location in Fort Lauderdale at a bunch of the big nightclubs that were on A1A.Most of the movie nightclub partying is filmed at the Candy Store which was probably the most famous club on the A1A strip in the 70’s and 80’s.The drinking age was 18 in Florida at the time,so the college students were very young. It really was a great time to be a teenager in Florida. You have to love the 80’s.Enjoy!

Spring Break Rocks!,

By Taheen Lopez (United States- San Diego, CA) -

I’ve been dying for this 1983 flick of SPRING BREAK to be released on DVD and am so delighted to hear that it will finally be released this Summer, since SPRING BREAK is a hilarious movie about some high school and college boys rooming together at a semi-swanky hotel in Ft. Lauderdale doing the typical things that teenage boys like and want to do on a nice relaxing vacation trying to escape from reality by trying to get drunk and score on girls, yet was amazes me is it just so happens that the producer and director of the original FRIDAY THE 13TH(Sean S. Cunningham)who typically directs horror flicks just happened to direct this comedy with a success since SPRING BREAK is a totally different kind of movie than FRIDAY THE 13TH or any other kind of flick that Sean S. Cunningham produces and/or directs.

So if you liked PORKYS, HARDBODIES, FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, or PRIVATE SCHOOL, you’ll definetly like SPRING BREAK.

As a matter of fact this movie takes me all the way back to memory lane to my childhood days when I was living in the Imperial Valley since I was 10 years old in the 4th grade at Rockwood Elementry School in Calexico, CA at the time of its theatrical release in the Spring of 1983 when I was still living in my hometown(El Centro, CA).

Three real-life buddies (John Cassavetes, Peter Falk, and Ben Gazzara) team up to play three pals whose lives suffer a shock wave when a fourth friend drops dead. After the funeral, the three friends, feeling death’s hot breath on their own necks, take off on a weekend-long debauch, with way too much drinking and loose women. But, in the process, they have lengthy heart-to-hearts about the nature of friendship, manhood, and marriage, among other things. As strong an example of Cassavetes’s improvisational art as any of his films, this film may test your patience with his indulgent treatment of actors, allowing them to explore their characters on film. Sometimes they come up empty, but more often, they find precious moments and revelations. And these three guys play off each other like long-time partners in a high-wire game of chicken in which they all emerge as winners. –Marshall Fine

Complex Comedy,

This review is from: Husbands [VHS] (VHS Tape)

In Ray Carney’s new book about Cassavetes he talks about how the director spenta year re-editing this movie because he thought it was too “entertaining” andtoo “funny” in its first version. Ray Carney’s Cassavetes on Cassavetes hashundreds of similar anecdotes by the filmmaker. It’s a perfect introduction toHusbands. It’s anything but a simple comedy. The characters are as unpredictableas real people and the situations as hard to figure out as stuff in real life.Husbands gets you all mixed up. Are these guys idiots or inspired? Are theyjerks or pursuing a dream? Cassavetes doesn’t want it to be too clear or tooeasy to understand. He doesn’t want us to laugh off the serious questions. Hetalks about that in Carney’s book, but it’s obvious from the film itself. Thisfilm should be required viewing for all men, so maybe they can begin tounderstand themselves, and it should be required viewing for all women so thatthey can begin to understand the men in their lives. It’s! not an easy thing to understand, which is why Cassavetes doesn’t make the movieeasy for us to understand, but the more times you see it, the more you will see.Read the Carney book too, for more of Cassavetes’ amazing insights into men andwomen and what he was trying to do in his films.

This is an excruciating, frustrating, painful comedy of men, and amazing in retrospect. Cassavetes was an authentic cinematic genius of American film, regardless of the philistine like comments I’ve seen in these reviews. What I don’t undertand is why they haven’t made it available on DVD. Are they restoring it? Are there legal tie-ups? What? I’ve only ever seen it in pieces on television. I would love to be able to examine fully, without commerical interruption or deletion….

“Greetings, Starfighter! You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Kodan Armada.” So begins an adventure of galactic proportions in The Last Starfighter. After Earthling Alex (Lance Guest) conquers the Starfighter video game, he is recruited by alien Centauri (Robert Preston) to be part of an elite legion of fighters. Leaving behind his trailer park home for the outer regions of space, Alex becomes the last hope for the beleaguered Star League and hundreds of worlds – including Earth. Loaded with out-of-this-world bonus features and digitally remastered for optimum picture quality, The Last Starfighter 25th Anniversary Edition is the ultimate video game fantasy come true!

80’s CGI Fun,

By SRFireside “ZOOM!” (Houston, TX United States) -
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)

The Last Starfighter is essentially a space opera hinged on the fantasy that video game skills will save the day. Obviously this movie was made for the young teen crowd (essentially 13 yr old boys with Ataris/ Intelivisions/ColecoVisions/etc) and has its share of action and comedy that, like most space operas in the 80’s, has more than one similarity to Star Wars (but then again Star Wars was a homage to the classic space operas of the golden age of television). So it’s not high caliber sci-fi, but it’s not B-movie fodder either.

The story is pretty simple: Evil leader of evil aliens wants to attack good aliens, so in walks a single hero who is the last hope for freedom. That’s about it. The movie doesn’t deviate too far from this premise other than to further flesh out the fish-out-of-water scenario of an 80’s Earthling thrust into space (as well as a little fun with an alien in 80’s Earth) as well as the inner battle of said Earthling to stay and fight for a Star League he doesn’t know or stay home and go to community college. A serviceable story, if not deep.

The acting does make the simple story enjoyable to watch. Lance Guest seems to have fun with the role, which works for the character. Biggest props go to esteemed Robert Preston’s Centauri, who plays the role with the style of a magician and the charisma P.T. Barnum. Another esteemed actor, Dan O’Herlihy, does a surprisingly good performance. Especially when you consider he is wearing full prosthetics with less facial mobility than the costumes from the original Planet of the Apes. Yeah there is a bit of theatrical “drama”, but that works with the whole space opera motif.

Special effects are a benchmark here because this is the first film to incorporate live action elements to computer generated animation. The CGA is pretty barbaric by today’s standards and even back then was noticeable. The biggest glare in this are the scenes flying in around asteroids, which look pretty “plastic” CG-wise. However the CG ships looked awesome and you can’t beat the camera angles and fly-byes that computer animation affords. Plus back then this was pretty state of the art.

Not a lot of details have come out regarding The Last Starfighter 25th Anniversary DVD, but this is what I found out so far:

- Digitally remastered video (finally!) so it should be MUCH cleaner than the first DVD release. Anamorphic wide screen.

- It will have the same commentary with director Nick Castle and production designer Ron Cobb as in the first DVD release.

- It will have the documentary Crossing the Frontier: Making The Last Starfighter. This also was on the previous DVD release and as far as 30 minute featurettes are concerned it covers all the bases well.

- A new featurette, Heroes of the Screen, will be included. Will post more information when I found out.

- Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and subtitled in English (SDH), Spanish and French.

- Theatrical and teaser trailer.

- Image gallery is likely, but not confirmed to be the same as the original release. This includes images from an alternate ending.

Now they are releasing a Blu-Ray version too and as far as features are concerned will be identical to the DVD release. The differences are of course 1080p high def picture, 5.1 DTS-HD audio and BD-Live.

This movie is definitely a time capsule for 80’s science fiction. If you like that sort of charm then by all means pick this one up. If you already have the original DVD you may still want to grab this for the remastered picture surround sound more than just to have the one new featurette.

For better or worse, David Mamet’s hit play Sexual Perversity in Chicago is watered down into this romantic comedy about a couple (played by Rob Lowe and Demi Moore) who get together and then fall apart due to Lowe’s character’s inability to commit. Jim Belushi is on hand as the gratuitously swinish best friend who looks at women as meat, and Elizabeth Perkins is entertainingly arch as Moore’s gal pal and Belushi’s nemesis. There’s nothing about this 1986 film by Edward Zwick (cocreator of TV’s thirtysomething and director of Glory and Courage Under Fire) that is at all reminiscent of Mamet, but that doesn’t make it bad or dull. While one can feel the script straining to fill in gaps where chunks of the original play have disappeared, Zwick often successfully tells the story without words at all, relying on the actors to convey pure emotion. Lowe is good, and the then-willowy Moore’s understated performance reminds one of the actress she might have been before she became a spectacle. –Tom Keogh

Arguably, ABOUT LAST NIGHT was not only one of the best date movies to come out of the 1980’s but also it’s simple story of boy-meets-girl in the modern age is one terrific romance. Rob Lowe (at the peak of his preeniness) and Demi Moore (at the birth of her true beauty) fall in and out and back in love, with Elizabeth Perkins and Jim Belushi along for the ride … and they almost steal the film. One great shooting script of the play SEXUAL PERVERSITY IN CHICAGO and terrific locations, ABOUT LAST NIGHT is a film that I’ll always cherish.

This review is from: About Last Night… (DVD)

Based on David Mamet’s play “Sexual Perversity in Chicago” this movie, starring Rob Lowe and a young Demi Moore, is a particular favorite of mine. It’s an involving and at times searing portrayal of the relationship between two people in 1980s Chicago and the interactions and problems that relationship causes them in their existing friendships.
First we have Rob Lowe as Danny, a salesman with dreams of one day owning his own restaurant and his best friend Bernie (played for almost comic relief by James Belushi). One night he meets in a bar the beautiful Debbie (played by Moore who has never looked more attractive) and her best friend and roommate Joan (played by Elizabeth Perkins).
After a rather shaky beginning Danny and Debbie are soon off on a whirlwind romance that eventually leads to Debbie moving into Danny’s apartment and the two inadvertently ignoring their friends (much to the chagrin of both Bernie and Joan).
Of course trouble is soon brewing as Danny has to forsake his rather player lifestyle and Debbie wants more commitment than he is willing, or able to offer. The movie follows the ups and downs in the relationship and leaves the viewer really rooting for the two of them to work out their differences. It’s hard to exactly figure out what it is that this movie does right. t seems to have a perfect blend of comedy, drama, passion and sorrow that makes for some compelling viewing. This movie would almost be required viewing for young adults as a precautionary tale if it were not for the gratuitous nudity (has Demi Moore ever had more topless scenes in any one picture?) and scenes of a drunk Danny spiraling down into despair.
This is a true gem of a movie and probably one of the best date movies ever. The DVD is a little thin on special features but at under $10 this is a must-own.

The Date Movie that Ruined my Relationship,

By Arsell Potasky “Arsell Potasky” (Oconto Falls, Wisconsin) -

This review is from: About Last Night [VHS] (VHS Tape)

I was in law school when I saw this flick with my girlfriend at the time, Joanne. Jo and I had been going steady two years, and were getting pretty serious. We were even talking about getting married.

I thought that the film was a real hoot, great lines. I came out of the film in a bouyant mood. But on the way home Jo was quiet, brooding. She asked me to pull over because she had to tell me something.

She said that she always wanted a guy like Danny Martin (Rob Lowe ) but instead she got me, a guy who was way too much like Bernie Litko(Jim Belushi). She said she wasn’t willing to settle for a Bernie Litko, and she told me it was over.

She wanted Rob Lowe, and that was that.

I admit that other of my friends told me that I reminded them of Bernie, and I have to say that I look vaguely like Jim Belushi, but still it hurt.

I married an Armenian who looks like a duskier version Demi Moore. Jo married a busdriver who looks like a somewhat mangled version of Rob Lowe.

It was a fateful evening.

Good flick, though.
