Never cared for anime, knew nothing about Gundam then all of a sudden I catch an episode of this on SciFi and I am surprisingly hooked. Takes me back to the days of watching Robotech as a kid. The storyline is addictive, the characters are likeable, the voice work is top notch, and if you know nothing about the Gundam mythos it doesn’t matter. I think this series works fine as a standalone. Would give this 5 stars but I am pissed they kept pushing back the release date on this and are prolonging the 2nd part by almost another 2 months. 2nd season is already on SciFi. There’s also only 9 episodes on this, should be at least 12 if its the first part of 2.

Co-produced by Hong Kong legend Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle), Dragonball Evolution is an agreeable if low-wattage live action adaptation of the iconic manga and anime series Dragon Ball. Director James Wong fuses the series’ fantasy-based characters and devices with a somewhat lackluster storyline involving average teen Goku (Justin Chatwin), who breaks from his wholesale pining for classmate Chi-Chi (Jamie Chung) to that he’s at the center of an intergalactic search for the all-powerful Dragonballs by evil warlord Piccolo (Buffy’s James Marsters). With the help of master Roshi (Chow Yun-Fat, who backburners his stoic screen image in favor of some God of Gamblers/Once a Thief-level hamminess), Goku develops his fighting skills to take on Piccolo and save the Earth. The film’s abundance of martial arts should please younger and less discerning viewers, but its hackneyed dialogue and sluggish pace (especially in the fight scenes, which stutter where they should flow) may disappoint longtime fans of the book and television adaptations. The CGI effects, which labor mightily to reproduce the source material’s eye-popping look, also fall short, though the cast is game, especially Marsters and Chow. — Paul Gaita

Dragonball Evolution is Easily one of the worst films I have ever seen.,

By Geoffrey Blagdan -

Since 2002, me and many other Dragonball fans around the world have feverishly anticipated the release of a live action adaptation of one of the most beloved anime franchises the world over.

The idea of a live action Dragonball movie brings so much potential to the table, and really changes the perspective of film making in bringing an anime to life, and bringing fantasy to life in a whole new way. This should have been something we have never seen before, it should have been aw-inspiring, captivating, and capturing the very essence of the Dragonball series that so many people have grown up with and come to expect.

Sadly, Dragonball Evolution is perhaps one of the worst movies I have ever laid my eyes on. Not only is this movie a wretched failure from a “fan” point of view since I am a fan of the material, but also as someone who loves and watches movies, and pays attention to Hollywood.

Within the last two years, we have seen some truely great films including. The Dark Knight, Iron Man, No Country for Old Men, Transformers, There Will Be Blood, Slumdog Millionaire, and many many more that would take up too much of this review.

With Dragonball Evolution, it takes all of the high calbur oscar-worthy/winning acting, and high grade special effects and production values, and pretty much takes it out with one destructive “air-bending” Ka-Me-Ha-Me-Ha(a little inside joke on the movie).

The movie is so out of touch with its source material, this movie can hardly be called “Dragonball”. Outside of name-sake(or Marque value) such as Dragonballs, Goku, Bulma, Yamcha, Shenlong, Ma-fu-ba(sealing technique for Piccolo), Piccolo, Grampa Gohan, Mai, Chi Chi, Master Roshi, Oozaru, and the Ka-Me-Ha-Me-Ha. This movie has next to nothing to do with the original story and characters.

Even if I was not a fan of the Dragoball series, and did’nt know what it was, I still would have found this movie attrociously bad.

The movie has so many problems, it’s hard to list them all, because some just don’t make any sense, or they are so confusing, it’s really hard to put any of the movie into a coherent perspective.

I’ll start with the performances of the actors. Simply put, Abysmal. They deliver pointless dialogue, have pointless scenes, no chemistry outside of boy-like-girl love interest, and lets you know you’re watching a bad movie and nothing else. The actors are either un-interesting, extremely campy, or the dialogue is so horrendous you just cringe at it.

You would think with an actor like Chow Yun Fat on board, this movie would have some deceny to it. But sadly no, his performance may be one of the worst of his career. Goku(Justin Chatwin) is beyond un-compelling. He’s just anger inducing to see him portray Goku in such poor character. Lusting after girls affections, wanting popularity, picked on by bullies for no reasonable explanation. Gag me with a spoon.

The story makes little sense. 2,000 years ago, Piccolo with his disciple the “Oozaru”(that’s right, not even calling him a “Saiyan”) tried to destroy/take over the world but was thwarted by monks and Piccolo was sealed away. Without any explanation, Piccolo is free from his prison, has Mai(his hench-woman) at his side(who by the way has no back story to explain how/why she’s with him), he’s in an air-ship. And we are given no explanation throughout the film on his full intentions, or anything else relating to his character. Also, he has the shortest amount of screentime of the movie, totaling 5 scenes.

Meanwhile Goku is turing 18, gets a dragonball from Gohan, and Goku is somehow involved this cliched prophecy with an eclipse that relates to Piccolo wanting to destroy/take over the world for no reason what so ever.

Later on with the final battle of the film is where the continuity of the film throws its hands in the air and walks away from the movie. Piccolo is somehow able to control the “Oozaru” side of Goku, and that Goku is the “Oozaru” from 2,000 years ago who served Piccolo. There’s absolutely no explanation at all as to how Piccolo is manipulating Gokus transformation, or how he even knows that he’s a Sayain. Or if Goku is the Oozaru, then what the hell is going on? And if Goku is 18, then how was he alive 2000 years ago serving Piccolo? It’s a total mind meltdown.

The movie is just full of continuity problems that plague the film from the main plot, to the character sub-plots that amount to absolutely nothing and have no sort of resolution. The special effects are horridly done, there’s so much wire work you could swear they worked in a circus. And it’s just a completely un-interesting film.

The acting is laughable and completely unbelieveable in any sense, the fighting and special effects are poorly done and look unconvincing, and overall boring. The story and plots are poorly written, confusing, and even leave a fan of the series like myself, completely lost in the continuity issues that plague this film.

This is easily one of the worst films FOX Studios has ever produced based on a major worldwide franchise. Do not buy this movie, it is a waste of time, and a complete disgrace to the series many fans know and love. But this is also an insult to people wanting to see a good movie, you’re going to have to look elsewhere because this movie has no entertainment value to speak of.

Overall, this movie is about as cliche as you can possibly get by ripping off of better movies like Spiderman and the Matrix, but also being totally un-original, and just making no sense what so ever with its story, characters, and relating to the Dragonball series.

This is a BIG INSULT to a great series.,

Everything in this movie is awful and sloppy!

The acting is bad, the plot is terrible, there are drab cliches, and a lot of rip-offs you wouldn’t believe. This has the name Dragonball on it but don’t expect anything of the sort! AVOID THIS FILM at all costs!

Not worth it AT ALL! Look elsewhere,

By Marc Xiong -

Do not even waste your money on this ’slap-to-the-face-of-db-fan-movie’. The story is so rushed that half the time one wonders what just happened? The special effects are so cheesy. Goku never went to school. Goku was never supposed to know what a girl is. Goku was never supposed to know cities existed.

To summarize the whole movie. Basically over 150+ episode were crammed into this 1hr+ movie, which translate to failure, rush, characters appearing out of the blue. Very very poor movie. It is a disgrace to use the word ‘DragonBall’ in this.

By shivatrance (rehoboth, DE USA) -

If you have never seen Eureka 7 you need to see it, period. If you are a fan of Evangelion, you need to see it, period. If you love crazy mecha action, you need to see it, period.

I’m not kidding. This show has me thinking . . . . dare I even say it. . . that it is even better than my beloved Evangelion. I never thought there would be anything that could ever come along that would make me even suffer a fleeting thought like that but with Eureka 7, my mind has been flooded with that realization. . . . Eureka 7 may be the greatest anime series of all-time.

Now it has to be said, there are a lot of similarities between Eva and Eureka 7, and you can tell that BONES was highly influenced when creating this story by the classic Angel series. How only the “chosen” can pilot the Nirvash (just like the 1st, 2nd and 3rd child in Eva) and there seems at least at the beginning to be another alien race that wants to destroy mankind (like the Angels in Eva) and that the subject of rebirth for mankind (the Third Impact). But Eureka 7 seems to run with these themes and tie them all together with one of the most heart-wrenching love stories I have ever seen. Pure brilliance.

And I have to say that I have watched the series both with the Eng subtitles and with the Eng dub and I have to say the English translation on the dub is great and perhaps delivers an even more moving performance from the voice actors.

I have never teared up more at an anime. Weird. What always got to me was during the English dub at the end of every episode Renton and Eureka would both say in unison “To be continued. . .” but in a way and tone that reflects how the episode ends emotionally. At the end of many episodes they sounded happy, chipper, excited, relieved, worried. . . it really let you know how the characters were feeling.

But what really got to me was the end of episode 47 I think. They had such a sound of hopelessness in their voices like everything was done. . . and then at the end of episode 49 . . . there was only Renton uttering those words. I have never been more emotionally invested in the characters of an anime series in my life and it may be because they reel you in with 50 episodes!

Buy this show.

In reply to the 1 star review with the main complaint being ‘this is a ripoff because it doesn’t have dubbing’:
What luxurious complaining. Certainly you must not be aware of the common prices of media in Japan. Fans regularly dish out $60 a disc for only one or two episodes!
As for dubs, if I stretch my imagination I can pretend to understand why a few people prefer them (maybe) but for something like Hayate with all the obscure references and jokes it makes… I can’t see the dub living up to it. Plus, if they don’t bother dubbing they can get the release out faster. Trailing on the popularity of the subs in the community will result in more sales. (Although Hayate is already not so new… but maybe for future shows)

Now for my opinion…
Hayate is a great comedy. Sometimes breaking the fourth wall but I’d like to say it doesn’t abuse the privilege. There are no shortage of parody references to other shows, so if you’re familiar with a variety of media it’s a bonus.
The series maintains a balance that would be appropriate and entertaining for children while young adults can also find it appealing.

Great family friendly manic humor,

By Michael L. Brazinski (Maryland, USA) -

I originally picked up this disk simple by its great name. I started watching with my two daughters (13 & 10) and we could not stop laughing through first episode. The self censoring such as referring to the Yazuka as “very generous people” and the Hayate’s mother’s gambling problems is “bad investments” just makes it funnier.

We’ve now made it through six of the seven episodes and are still laughing. The series is rated 13+ but we haven’t found anything offensive that our 10 year old shouldn’t see. There’s occasional references to Nagi (the female lead character) being flat chested but that’s about it.

One of my favorite characters in the series is Nagi. Although she is a rich brat, she’s likable, unlike Louise in “The Familiar of Zero”. It was pleasantly surprising that she didn’t come off as someone who just hates working class peasants.

The series seems to pull in the best of several other series. The slapstick humor reminds me of Excel Saga. The school relations remind me of Negima! (the original, not the fan-service reboot). All in all, it just works. I hope Bandai is committed to releasing the entire series.

The lack of a English dub is a mixed blessing. Yes, it’d be nice to be there but we’re not having any problems subtitles. There’s also minimal extras but I bought the disk for the series, not the extras.

Do Not buy! Bandai is ripping you off big time!!!!!!,

By Mark Ferguson “Mario1-7″ -

Ok Hayate The Combat Butler is a High Quality Anime that is worthy of being released in a fair fashion for the fans. Bandai is trying to walk all over people with this. Calling this DVD release Part 1 with 7 episodes is insulting, and with the biggest problem being no English dub track, they have over priced and ruined a an awesome series.. People that was looking forward to Hayate the combat butler I am sorry that you and I won’t get to see the Anime the way it was suppose to be seen. I watched Hayate already Subtitled only but when a Anime is released on DVD it should not be subbed only unless its a really low Quality and that is defiantly NOT the case with Hayate The Combat Butler…. Bandai should be ashamed!

Product Description
Nagisa Aoi has just transferred to a prestigious all-girls’ school that happens to share dormitory facilities with two other academies for young ladies. The new surroundings are a lot to take in, but she quickly adapts to life in Strawberry Hall with the help of newfound friends. However, when Nagisa catches the eye of Shizuma Hanazono, the respected representative of all three schools known as the Étoile, both their lives are forever changed. Bonds beyond mere friendship develop between the two and those around them amidst a school year of heated conflicts, petty jealousies, and crossed boundaries.

Almost Overwhelmingly Sweet,

By P. J. Grant “Anime Guru” -

For all those who find the subtle hints at lesbianism in such shows as Revolutionary Girl Utena and Maria Watches Over Us annoyingly vague, look no further. Strawberry Panic pulls no punches, calling a spade a spade… without ever once using the word or being judgemental. Essentially a high school romance, or rather a set of them, SP takes place at three linked all-girl’s academies that share a common dorm. With casual aplomb, the show deals with all aspects of high-school dating: jealousy, love triangles, shyness, and inevitable seperation. The characters are well designed, rich with nuance, and - if lacking in depth and background at times - engaging as all get out. While essentially character driven, this show does have more of a coherent plot and story arc than Marmite… plus each of the three schools has its own set of uniforms, all of them significantly more attractive than those found in Marmite or Utena.

While It Doesn’t Have Hard-core Fighting This Heart-Warming Series Is Worth A Look,

By Rich “xman” (CA) -

I had gotten this on order the same time of another series Simoun, and while it doesn’t deal with supernatural beings or mecha battles the series still is entertaining enough to be justified on getting for someones collection. The small part of the story has to do with a new young girl’s transfer to a luxurious looking school for young ladies, and while trying to find her niche in the school stumbles on a mixture of romantic liaisons, troublesome jealous feelings against her, and her own growing feelings for one the schools most respected and honored students. The series is one gender(female)romances and while some might find that offensive they’ve no right to complain if they read the amazon sites editorial about the series in the first place. My two complaints are that one is the series is only subbed and while the cast were fantastic in their roles for the series it’s sometimes nice not having to read the subtitles all the time, though if they couldn’t find a decent group of voice actors for the series than I truly am greatly relived that they just left it subbed because nothing is worse than an awful dubbing. The second is that the series slim-pack is a dvd case that holds all five dvds inside it, I would rather of had them put the dvds in individual slim-packs but like almost all anime or business companies in the United States their trying to make cost-saving choices on their products, and for the price I guess we can forgive them for this one little annoyance….

By SuplexBomber (Toronto, ON CAN) -

I really enjoyed the first season of this and I am currently watching the second season which will end in about 1-2 weeks concluding this fantastic series. Anyways back the the the main topic. This series has arguably the best animation in a Gundam series ever and the first to be produced in wide screen HD format. The mech designs are all unique and colorful, The character developement is also well played and the story is quite solid. I could not compare this series to Gundam Wing even though they share similarities to each other. But each have their own twists and settings and characters. Overall if you are a mecha fan or Gundam fan I highly recommend this series. I’m positive you will not regret it.

Don’t get the comparisons,

By Eric D. Johnson “G-Freak” (Austin, MN USA) -

Hands down, Gundam 00 is quite possibly the best Gundam to date (up there with Char’s Counterattack and 08th team - and nowhere near that horrible Gundam Wing series). The action is over the top, the plot, while similar in some respects to other Gundam series, it varies in that it didn’t fall off into that ridiculous, destroy the suit not the pilot sort of crap. It’s a tad more visceral than the others. It was also novel in that they mirrored real-world events and shied away from space colonies. It’s vibrant, exciting and very little in the way of plot droppage. If you like Gundam, then this one surely will not disappoint.

A Great Gundam Series,

By E. Lopez “X10A Freedom” (Orb) -

I’ve finished watching this series and I must say that it’s one of the better series. As a gundam fan that started with Gundam Wing I can say that I am very please with the story that gundam designs. What I’m especially pleased with is the very limited recycling of animation which we see a lot in Gundam SEED Destiny (which is still another one of my favorites). I only wished that some things were a little better explained and it kind of annoyed me that the gundams had numerous other features that you would see in the manga or the model kits, but you never see or hardly see used in the anime. An explain of this was that 00 Gundam actually had a 7 sword system much like Exia did. But towards the end of the series, Setsuna has only the GN sword 3 in use for the final battles. He never bothered to combine his GN swords 2 until his final battle with Mr. Bushido. There are a few others I’m sure most other gundam fans are aware of. Aside from that being a little annoying to find out, the story was just a bit predictable. I think it’s great addition to the gundam line with many first times in the series. Which had me smiling and rewatching. A must for gundam fans.
