The best Friday The 13TH film EVER!,
By David J. Brown -
Yeah, this sequel is so good it had the balls, nay, the charisma to not even stick a Roman numeral in its title! This sequel has the best photography, the best special effects, the best writing, the best characters, and is the last time Jason is scary. I found him creepy in part 2, boring in part 3, but truly fierce and frightening in this film. After this sequel Jason turned into the star of the series and fans were more interested in seeing him mutilate kids in creative ways. We stopped fearing him after this installment and he was turned into a super hero.
This Friday has the best and most relatable cast. Everyone makes you care about them. There isn’t one character in this film that you want to see go, and even some of the ones you think will make it, don’t. Like fanboys turned filmmakers Joe Lynch and Adam Green observe on their commentary track, “This one is like they wrote a bunch of John Hughes youth picture characters into a slasher film.” Which is pretty much what you have. They seem real, they are likeable and even funny, especially the Crispin Glover character. It also has some of Savini’s best make up work in his career, maybe one step behind his masterful work in the little seen The Burning. Even Jason’s design is creepy in this film. He moves like a fast shark and the way he attacks is dictated by anger in the final reel. Yeah, so all those haters or lovers of the new faster Jason in the remake, need to actually watch the orignals or rewatch them. Jason only became slow when Kane Hodder doned the hockey mask and he was zombie for the lack of a better word.
Like parts 5 and 6, there’s a 10 minute making of retro doc that has the director, writer, editor, and Savini, of course. It’s fast and to the point and doesn’t repeat too much of the info contained in the commentary tracks, as well as the previously released From Crystal Lake To Manahttan box set. The commentary is AWESOME, both of them. On track one we get director Joseph Zito(Red Scorpion, The Prowler), the film’s editor, Savini, and Bareny Cohen the screenwriter. It’s very detailed and the crowded track doesn’t become a muddle of voices trying to talk over each other thankfully. The second track has directors Joe Lynch(Wrong Turn 2) and Adam Green(Hatchet, Spiral). It’s very funny and it feels like you’re hanging out in a room with two good buddies who are as much of horror geeks as you are. They talk about why they think this is the best in the series and how it inspired their own work.
The deleted scenes and outtakes are very interesting. It mostly consists of variations of already included scenes in the film, most of them having to do with the gore moments. Yes, Jason’s climactic headache was way more bloody and bunch longer in some takes. Also, we get an alternate ending that is essentially a dream sequence more in line with the previous film’s endings. It’s interesting but ultimately worthy of being deleted. We also get a short featurette dedicated to Joesph Zito commenting over extra footage of Crispin Glover doing his infamous Dead F*#k Dance. Apparently, it was shot with AC/DC’s Back In Black playing on set. Another lame segement of fan films called Crytal Lake Momories is included and so is the awesome Daniel Farrands(screenwriter of Halloween:The Curse Of Michael Myers, director of doc His Name Was Jason) mock news show regarding the legend of Jason and the murders. Some debunk it and others subscribe to the myth. It’s funny and very fan friendly with tons of in-jokes and funny on-camera interviews.
This is the best DVD edition of any of the films thus far, and it’s the best film in the series. Get it now!
PS: Just a heads up, though the picture and sound on the new Friday discs is lightyears ahead of the From Crystal Lake To Manhattan box set, some of that set’s special features are not included. For example, the only member of part five that they were able to nab for the box set regarding part 5 was Corey Feldman, and he’s the only one not available on the new special edtions for part 4 or 5. Plus, the no special features part 3 and the lame special features part 2, are helped considerably by holding onto the box set’s Killer Extras bonus disc. Plus, part three in that set has a fun cast commentary for part 3. I would’ve much rather seen a film about the actors in part 3 then sit throught that horrible sequel about the characters that they played. Finally, the Killer Extras disc has some cool John Carl Buechler and Tom Savini behind the scenes stuff regarding the make up and gore effects. So, don’t chuck the whole box set yet, well, if you’re a horror movie geek like me anyway.
Best of the Series…We will now find out what happened to Mrs. Jarvis in the Alternate ending,
By Mark Armstrong “FrIGHt FaN” (Alexandria, VA) -
This is clearly the best in the series with Tom Savini and some star-studded cast members and the most terrifying Jason of the series. I remember sneaking in a theater in Georgetown(D.C.) back in 1984 because they would not let us in becuase we were not over 17. It was well worth it because this film scared the livin S*** out me. The kills were awesome and the way Jason was killed off has to go down as the most gruesome kills for a villian. The screenplay writer and Tom Savini really made this movie. You never know when Jason was going to appear which really added to the terror. It picks up were part 3(used the same movie location as part 3) left off then to a morgue then back to a different part of Camp Crystal Lake were the Jarvis family is. They don’t make films like this anymore and all you see now are these films with all of this CGI which makes most films look like a cartoons. Tom Savini really adds realism to his effects of his past films and this was his best work. The musical score is really well done in this picture as well. There is an alternate ending included with this DVD that shows what happens to Mrs. Jarvis (not included in the original) but their is no sound to it and only subtitles. I own 3 versions of this and will get it again when it comes on Blu-Ray as well. I definately recommend this a a strong buy.
