Big at it’s best,
By JVAN “Electronics Shopper” (Ohio) -
Compared to earlier releases, this looks amazing! It doesn’t have that sharpness that makes modern blu-rays amazingly detailed, but it’s not needed or missed. Watching this is like watching it in a theater. If your TV or player has a Cinema or Movie mode (which mutes colors and/or softens the picture) turn it off. The movie already has the “soft” cinema look those modes induce. That being said, the colors are absolutely perfect, and it’s hard to take your eyes away; especially if you’ve seen this before. The blacks are always inky, and overall there are never speckling or noise artifacts.
The sound is punched up to modern standards as well (see below) and sounds amazing in surround (considering how the previous releases sounded). It’s up to modern day standards for a drama/comedy. Dialog is clear and easy to understand, and surround and L/R components are present only when appropriate, not just to show off surround technology. But when it does kick in (for scenes with music, etc.), it’s enveloping. Definitely up to par with modern movies.
You have a choice of the regular or extended edition. The extended edition is fun. I’ve seen this movie many times, and the extra/extended scenes make it a lot of fun, since you never know when they’re going to occur. Overall, if this is currently, or ever has been one of your favorites, you need to get it, even if you have it on DVD. It will be one of your favorites again!

A classic 80’s comedy that never gets old, with a pretty good transfer for Blu-Ray.,
By D. Stone “Stoneman” (Sacramento, CA) -
I dont think there are many people who have not seen Big by now. While the story has been used many, many times, this movie has something that seems to have a little bit extra. Now that Tom Hanks is an A list actor, some say that started right here. This movie is not just the typical early Hanks comedy, it has a story that has a bit more credibility than the others. If you have not seen this movie, it is a must. Overall, the movie would easily get an A from me.
That aside, this Blu-Ray debut of Big looks very good. It has 2 versions of the film. One is the theatrical cut, the other is an extended version with an extra 20 minutes included.
The picture is the best possible version to date. While this title does not stand out when compared to many top tier titles, it does look much improved over the standard dvd releases of the past. While the film does have some natural grain, it does look clean. For the most part, the print is free of dirt specs or any blemishes. It appears that Fox has cleaned the print well and taken good care of this film. The blacks hold up very well, they are nice and deep when shown. The look of the movie seems accurate. The fleshtones look good, as do the rest of the colors. The closeups show very good detail. This title does not have that 3 dimentional pop that makes a movie really stand out though. It looks good, not great. Anyone who loves 80’s movies as I do knows that many movies from that era look and sound dated. This one is much the same. It is clean however, which is a nice plus. Grade would be a 7 out of 10, or a good solid C to C+.
The sound is nothing to talk about. This movie is a comedy, so what can the audio track really offer. The voices are clean and free from distractions. That is what you will get here. We all know that action/adventure movies and sci-fi get the most out of DTS-HD audio. The rear speakers dont get much use. Nor does the subwoofer. This is a center channel speaker movie for the most part. Does it’s job, not much more. Grade would be a 7 out of 10, or a C.
There are some extras here also. 3 Featurettes, audio commentary, a TV special from AMC, as well as the usual deleted scenes. Not to mention the movie trailer. Some interesting stuff if your into extras. Overall, this title should get a 7 out of 10. Being that you cannot give a 3 1/2 star review, I found it closer to 4 than 3. A great movie for sure. At the list price of $34.99, I would not upgrade fron the standard dvd myself. But, at $17.99….it was worth it to me. I held out on the re-release of the standard dvd last year for this one anyway.
BIG is great!!,

This is an hysterical movie with Tom Hanks at his best. Why he’s not listed as the star beats me?! Plus, as an added addition, you get to see that cute Dr. McDreamy, who plays Tom as a child. Definitely ok for kids 10 & up.
