Above shadowy, crime-infested streets a masked avenger watches. Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht) was one of Central City’s finest cops until a gangster’s bullet ended his life. Now Fate has brought him back from the beyond as The Spirit, a street-hardened hero who faces off against seductive foes like the voluptuous Sand Saref (Eva Mendes) and the alluring Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson). Then, of course, there’s his evil archenemy, The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), with a mission to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality in this graphic action-thriller.

A joke of itself,

By RW Griffith (Linear North) -

The Spirit was a good comic strip series in the 1930’s. However, whatever was good did not translate to the screen. This movie is an absolute mess. This is about the most unbalanced movie ever. One minute it’s dark and gritty the next minute it’s absolutely silly and completely undignified. I don’t know how Sam Jackson gave his performance without laughing throughout the whole production. It has some of the worst dialogue ever, some of the worst “jokes” ever, and some very, very bad acting from some people you’d expect better from. It may not be as bad as “garbage day!” but at times it almost gets THAT bad. The movie tries to take itself seriously one minute, then the next it goofs around. This movie is like a psychotic high school student on crack, it’s lame, and it’s stupid and I totally don’t recommend it. If you don’t believe me and you absolutely must see this, please don’t buy it. Rent it instead.

Not great, but worth watching,

Making movies of comic books seems to be the “thing” right now, and some of the movies are great, some are okay and some stink. This is an okay one, although there are parts that come close to being great. For one thing, this movie doesn’t really take itself seriously, and that’s always a good thing. Not that it plays for laughs. It doesn’t. However, the actors are having fun with this one. None of the actors and/or actresses are bad at all, although it was strange to see Samuel L. Jackson in a role like this. I almost expected him to start chewing the scenery, but that’s the kind of performance that was required for this movie, and he is brilliant. Scarlett Johansson is also wonderful in her role. I don’t think this movie will ever be considered great, but it is certainly worth watching and I do have it reserved when it is released on DVD. A fun watch, if nothing else.

The Spirit Will Grow On You. If You Let It.,

By Damon Smith “MrCoffin23″ (USA) -

After seeing it the 2nd time, The Spirit did grow on me a lot. My last review was a 3 star rating for this movie. But now I am willing to give it an honest 4 star rating. The Spirit is definitly not perfect, but it is entertaining enough to buy on DVD once its released. If thats only you let the movie grow on you. I know the movie wasen’t as good as most people thought it was. For this reason, The Spirit is now honestly one of the worst movies of 2008 but still has my attention. The first 5 minutes of the film is very cheesy but now to me its also laughable. Personally, I thought this was more of a wacky comedy/crime fighter film. Only one scene in the entire movie that is still a little hard to get use to, its when The Spirit and his girlfriend, Sand Saraf start argueing after her father has been murdered when they were teenagers. In my opinion, it was really bad acting but hopefully when I get the DVD that particular scene will start growing on me (it probably won’t). I’m not one of those Comic Book nerds, infact I am not a huge fan of comics or graphic novels but I do like a few comic book/super-hero movies and The Spirit is just one of those films that for some reason will not let me hate the movie.

The best actor in this film, is Samuel L. Jackson that plays The Octopus who is a geneticist that can make clones who are fat and very ugly, But also somewhat funny and obnoxious. The Octopus makes me laugh almost everytime he is in the movie, and I will have no idea why I am laughing.

For some strange reason, if you really think hard about this, The Spirit sort of has an old school feel of acting from the 1970s or 60s in about half of the movie. The Sin City graphics was also a great choice for The Spirit. But Sin City and The Spirit are different, and you may find the visuals to be, how should I say this, uhh… stupid. Actually, if you are expecting Sin City styleish graphics from The Spirit, then you will hate the movie. The Spirit is a great film on its own level. Don’t let the Sin City graphics fool you. The only bad part of the movie is the young Sand Saraf when she was argueing with the young Denny Colt. And the first 5 minutes of the film is bad but is now just funny to me.

The plot focuses on In Central City, rookie cop Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht) returns from the dead as the detective known only as The Spirit to fight crime. After a fight with his nemesis, The Octopus (Samuel Jackson), he takes the chest that he thinks holds The Mystical Blood but only finding out that it was the treasure of the Augonauts. Irretated The Octopus becomes, he then has a plan to make a deal with Sand Saraf who accidently took The Blood Of Heracles. The Octopus only wants to drink The mytsical blood to become Immortal and rule the world while Sand Saraf only cares about the treasure of the Augonauts, but the way she puts it is “the shiny thing thats the end of all shiny things.” Meanwhile, The Spirit and his newer girlfriend, Ellen Dolan is trying to look out for each other and Commessioner Dolan is having a hard time getting along with The Spirit and starts argueing with Ellen (his daughter). The Spirit wants revenge of The Octopus and is also trying to look for Sand Saraf (his old girl). Later The Octopus is trying to create more clones, and ends up making a foot with a head that is surprisingly alive and starts hopping around the table, The Octopus is really in awe with what he just created and thinks “its really damn weird.” And keeps asking Silken Floss if this thing is “just plain damn weird” he puts it. Silken Floss is trying to talk to him about the latest knews. But then she agrees with The Octopus thinking that the foot with a head attached is “damn weird.” Later that evening, The Spirit and the gang make a plan to meet up with The Octopus while Sand Saraf has a plan of her own to get The treasure of the Augonauts. But the commessioner only finds out at the end that The Spirit had something to do with Sand Saraf’s plan and gets annoyed about it and tells The Spirit that he does not ever want to talk with The Spirit again. The Octopus barely dies from an explosion of a bomb that he recieved from The Spirit.

Overall, I think people have mis-understood this movie a lot. I think the problem was that they thought The Spirit was another rip off of Sin City. Or they think that Frank Miller was trying to copy Sin City but failed hard. This isin’t true. The Spirit is not really meant to be like Sin City. Even if it has some of the same graphics. Its still a great movie. Only a couple scenes that is bad. Thats why The Spirit is a 4 star rating.
