In 1999, when North Hampton released their Fully Restored 60th Anniversary Limited Edition DVD, it came from a public domain print. The beginning was a fixed image with sound, then the picture started moving. There were jaggy lines all throught the film during any movement and the colors were bleeding out of the lines. A terrible DVD edition of a true classic.
2000 was the year that Hal Roach Studios released their version mastered from “ORIGINAL 35mm NITRATE TECHNICOLOR MASTER! The two prints are night and day if viewed side by side.
Now, Koch is trying to tell you that they have mastered this one for Blu-ray from original masters that were used for the 1999 edition. I guess you’ll say anything to sell your product.
You can bet that they are using the same old public domain print for this Blu-ray release.
Who in their right mind would want to see a square movie, zoomed in and the top and bottom cut off so it will fill your new widescreen television…I hope no one!
Do yourself a favor and let this one slide and wait for Hallmark Entertainment, who owns the Hal Roach films, to release it in it’s proper original aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and not 1.77:1.

Butchered - do not buy!,

This important film has been butchered for it’s Blu-ray release, reformatted to fill a widescreen (16×9) television, with approximately a quarter of the entire image lost in the process. A sale for this BD is a vote for artistic revisionism. Vote with your wallet and say no to the butchery of classics.

This release is cropped to 16:9 widescreen. A large portion of the picture is missing.

What a joke. Why even bother releasing this on Blu-ray, the format that is supposed to offer a cinematic experience in the home?

UPDATE: Not only this, but the source for this BD is STANDARD DEF.

Recipe for a quick buck:

1. Take old style Composite video Standard Definition master of public domain film.
2. Subject the image to HUGE levels of noise reduction to make everything look glossy.
3. Chop the top and bottom off to fill a 16:9 TV.
4.
